The Bold and the Ruthless
The Bold and the Ruthless
The Physics Building is a bit more involved than the Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering Buildings. Unless it's unlocked (the main entrance on the McCormick Road side is often unlocked late into the night), it requires first going down into the New System of the Steam Tunnels. Instead of going the way into the whole New System when you go down the grate behind Physics, simply go towards Bonnycastle Drive once you’re down the grate. It’ll turn left after a little ways, and there’ll be a metal grate. It’s possible to fit under this grate. You need to turn your head on its side, but almost anyone can fit through the gap.
This tunnel leads into the Physics Building’s basement. Leave the basement by the designated exit path and you’ll be in a stairwell. Go up to the second floor. Leave the stairway and you’ll be in a hallway. Go to the right (the left should be a wall of windows anyway). You’ll reach a hallway going off to the right. Go down this hallway. Right before office 136 there is a stairway. Go in here. On your direct left there is a ladder leading up to a hatch, which leads onto the lower physics roof. Voila. Just be careful not to get seen, as you will be kind of visible if you stand up above the few-foot wall around the perimeter.
There is another roof, at the very top, that has an amazing view, including a nice direct line-of-sight up to Monticello, and is where the above photo was taken. We won't tell you how to get there, but if you use your gulliver it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. There’s also a third roof you can reach, but it takes a bit of skill. I’ll leave that one as another challenge.
